This Sunday I drove down to San Diego to thank my Mother for doing the following things in my life; birthing me, stopping my sister from feeding me scrambled eggs when I was only a few days old, killing the rooster that tried to make me blind, turning off “The Wizard of Oz” (on audio cassette) when we were driving through Kansas/Oklahoma and tornadoes were touching down around us, saving me from Grimace (I knew he started out evil, never changed in my eyes), stopping store managers from yelling at me when I pulled a fire alarm and later stole a toy, making me do my own laundry, allowing us to tear up the back yard for the adventure of it all, letting me find my own beliefs, not killing me multiple times I probably deserved it, always letting me chase my dreams, forcing me into responsibility, telling me (when I was 22) she trusted me to drink alcohol when I was 18 (could have helped to know when I was 18), allowing me to find out what I wanted to do in life (even when it took a few years), being alive.

To celebrate we drove up to Julian and had lunch. On the way we drove by our old cabin (not much has changed) and the nearby pond (basically does not exist anymore) and saw the scarred landscape finally coming back after the fire. No trip to Julian is complete without a visit to the famous candy store (which used to have it’s own hive of bee’s that would fly in this strange tubing on top and presumably make honey). Our lunch was quite spectacular and of course we took an apple pie with us for the trip home.

For the record, as Mother’s love nature and craft like things, Julian is quite the hit for Mother’s Day.
