Last week, everyones favourite writer/director Quentin Tarantino made some comments about Italian cinema from the Cannes Film Festival. Quentin’s usually pretty reserved about the state of cinema, and he’s almost never involved in anything controversial so this came quite off the cuff to many (read: Quentin is always controversial, and usually right). Tarantino has been heavily influenced over his career by the olde Cinema de Italia (that’s right I used the Queen’s English and Italian in a mere 4 words) genres of Spaghetti Westerns and Horror. Here are his thoughts on the current state…

Quentin Tarantino

“New Italian cinema is just depressing. Recent films I’ve seen are all the same. They talk about boys growing up, or girls growing up, or couples having a crisis, or vacations of the mentally impaired.”

I love Quentin, and if I had the time in my life to watch movies about people growing up and having a crisis about being mentally impaired on vacation, I’d agree with him. People in Italy who make movies about people growing up and having a crisis about being mentally impaired on vacation however, don’t seem to agree with him. Sophia Loren had the following to say….

Sophia Loren

“How dare he, how dare he talk about Italian cinema when he doesn’t know anything about American cinema.”

The really important part I took away from all of this is… Sophia Loren is still alive?
